Poem for a bright future

What do we need to change

To keep us living well?

Not our northern climate

Or the Pentland Firth’s swell

And not my yearly voyage to Stromness

Or drinks at the Edinburgh festival

I know they’re beneficial to my health

Not unnecessary rituals

As is solidarity

With one another

Standing up for the minority

Sisters and brothers!

Tapping into the good things

We have here in the present

Accepting the diversity life brings

Not looking for things to resent

What keeps me thriving

Is our amazing earth

In spite of all my striving

It’s the only true thing of worth

The best thing is a garden

And a voice that echoes hope

As public attitudes harden

Towards those who cannot cope

I live here in Scotland

It’s where I nurture my soul

But I know in my heart of hearts

The beauty of the world as a whole

We can sometimes change our politicians

Although they’re just human too

As they make the decisions

That either punish us or pull us through

Unrest that seems amongst everyone

Can somehow be relieved

In all the cultures under the sun

Tolerance can be achieved

Peace needn’t be at any price

We must first accept ourselves

Not comparing with others, men and mice

However deep inside we delve

So let’s continue evolution

Without eternal punishment

Instead of hate try resolutions

Real spiritual nourishment

So what one thing would I change here

To keep me living well?

Perhaps I could stop trying to change the world

And be the change myself
