Born in a storm

I was born in a storm and a power cut. It was a short labour for my mother who told the midwife that I was coming but was dismissed as an unmarried mother who knew no better. Head already born they moved her onto the trolley to go to the labour ward. She got no further. I was born on the trolley at ten past midnight. I wish I could remember that moment when I first saw light. I wish I could remember my life in the womb, brief as it was. I was only just over 5lbs. Six weeks early I had a shock of black hair and was clearly in a hurry. I was doted on from the first. I was cheerful and loveable. When I was diagnosed with what was then manic depression I used to wonder when it had all gone wrong. Was it my dramatic and potentially unsafe birth? Had they damaged my tiny, precious, new brain in the move to the trolley? But why then was there no sign until my teens? No it can't be that. Could it be my upbringing? It was a little unconventional...
