Pretender

Life is all pretending
We're pretend in every way
We smile and say we're fine
And we're pretending every day

You look at me and wonder
If I love you, if I care,
And I tell my eyes to tell you
That my love for you is there

They want to know I'm happy
They worry if I'm sad
So I smile to reassure them
That my life isn't so bad

These fret if I don't phone them
They think I get too down
So I post some pics on Facebook
Choosing ones where I don't frown

And honesty is lost within
This well-told web of lies
Told by smiles and gentle touches
Spoken words and smiling eyes

Truth hearts, they say, and rightly
So I lie to set you free
But in this self-made prison
It's pretending that hurts me.
